What Is an EMDR Intensive?

When most people think about therapy, they picture meeting with a therapist once a week for about an hour.

An EMDR Intensive offers another option.

An Intensive isn't simply a longer therapy session. It's a different therapeutic experience.

Rather than spreading the work across weekly appointments, an Intensive creates dedicated space to focus on a specific treatment goal without having to stop just as the process begins to deepen.

For some people, that uninterrupted time can make all the difference.

Why It Can Feel Different

One of the things that fascinates me most about EMDR is the brain's ability to make connections.

I sometimes compare it to a spider web.

We may touch one strand, but the vibration travels throughout the entire web.

EMDR can feel much the same way. We may begin with one memory, only to discover links to experiences, beliefs, emotions, or patterns that initially seemed unrelated.

Sometimes those connections emerge quickly.

Other times they unfold gradually.

Rather than stopping and restarting the process week after week, an Intensive creates an opportunity to remain in the work.

It means allowing the nervous system space to settle, giving protective parts the opportunity to recognize that they don't have to stay on high alert.

As a sense of safety begins to emerge, deeper processing can unfold naturally.

Unlike ongoing therapy, where the focus may shift from session to session, an Intensive is designed with a specific focus in mind.

That doesn't mean we ignore unexpected insights. Sometimes they deepen the work we're already doing. Other times, we recognize that they may become the focus of future work, allowing us to remain focused on the work already underway.

What to Expect

Long before the first processing session begins, we're already preparing for the work together. We spend time clarifying goals, identifying potential targets, reviewing relevant history, and determining whether an Intensive is the right fit. Clients also complete a workbook that supports reflection and helps guide treatment planning.

Once we've decided to move forward, we'll create a plan that best supports your goals, schedule, and clinical needs.

The processing sessions themselves can be structured in different ways, allowing us to tailor the experience to your individual needs.

The Intensive also includes a follow-up session to discuss how things have been unfolding, assess current symptoms, and determine next steps.

For some people, that means returning to ongoing therapy. Others may choose another Intensive focused on a different area of healing. And for some, the Intensive itself provides the focused work they were seeking, with follow-up available if needed.

What's Possible

An Intensive creates an opportunity for depth that isn't always possible in a traditional weekly format.

I've watched people make connections in an Intensive that might have taken weeks or months to emerge otherwise.

The difference isn't that healing happens faster. It's that there is uninterrupted time for the process to continue unfolding.

When we're able to remain in the work, connections emerge, patterns become clearer, and beliefs that once felt confusing begin to make sense.

An EMDR Intensive isn't about trying to fit months of therapy into a few days.

It's about giving the process the time and attention it deserves.

Whether it's the right approach depends on your needs, your goals, and where you are on your healing journey.
